I have 18 diverse kindergartners who lay on the floor with big books and absorb the pictures, charts, maps and the collaborative learning that occurs while having fun with books. They enjoy discussing the pictures, asking each other questions from their books, and reading to each other. My Title I school has a group of students that benefit greatly from every exposure to all types of experiences. I have found that big books allow for many students to access information and share in conversation, building language and friendships. They laugh, they question, they take what they know and create new thoughts. Organizing the big book collection allows for independent book selection to occur. Allowing them ownership of their own learning builds a desire to learn. My students have benefited from the collaborative learning big books provide. We need a system to organize the books to allow for easy selection.
