70% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. In my 1st year here I've learned of many students with extremely challenging home lives. Often the band room becomes a second-home or safe haven for them. It is a place they can feel safe, welcomed and successful. The band program here recently struggled with director changes and other challenges, but my students have worked hard to turn the program around. They have a new sense of pride in what they do. They frequently arrive with smiles and we often laugh in rehearsal while working to create quality performances for the community through ball game performances, pep rallies, parades and concerts. Many of our students can not participate in band because we run out of school-owned instruments, but they can not afford their own. Others are able to buy an instrument, but must buy something cheap and of such poor quality that it simply causes frustration or remains at the repair shop more often than in their hands.
