If you are reading this, thank a teacher! Probably, you need to thank several, and the first would be a preschool or Kindergarten teacher. Lucky you! This year, our first graders are starting out behind, with only bits and pieces of preschool and Kindergarten under their belts. As a result, they missed part, most, or even all of their first foundational experiences with letters, sounds, and reading. Many kids started first grade learning their ABC's when in other years, they would have been writing books of their own. They urgently needed help with letter sounds, especially the third of our class who are learning English as a Second Language. To remedy the gaps, our school provided some wonderful technology and software to individually assess, instruct, and provide practice for our students in their favorite format - video games! This fantastic technology helps me identify and fill in specific holes for children individually without taking away from regular class time or slowing our first grade instruction. Or it would, if the kids could hear it. The school did not provide headphones, and obviously kids don't get much out of a phonics program they cannot hear. At first, I provided kid-sized headphones from my own pocket. And provided them again. And asked for parent donations. Then, I finally realized that to survive first grade, headphones need to be sturdy. Please help our students make use of the wonderful technology already awaiting them, just out of "ears" reach, by providing us with quality headphones durable enough to withstand little hands!
