My students come from low to middle-class socioeconomic neighborhoods. While we have many parents that want to be involved in their child's education, there are many that are not able to participate for various reasons. Some children don't have basic needs like food and shelter, and several don't have the "emotional IQ" to be problem-solvers and peacemakers. I believe children want to do the right thing, but they don't always have the tools necessary to make good choices and decisions. I have a 5th grader that wants to be compassionate, but has a hard time doing so because she is often teased. I have a 2nd grader and a 4th grader who have parents that are divorcing and facing many problems of their own...in turn, the kids are lucky to make it to school on time, let alone be ready to learn. I have a Kindergartner who is stressed out because he is never sure who will be picking him up after school. I can go on, but regardless the reason, kids need both academic and emotional support.
