Our school just created a brand new music program. With a new program come opportunities to get things right the first time, opportunities to create something unique and exciting, and opportunities to grow. It also brings expenses. A music program, in particular, can cost tens of thousands (or even hundreds of thousadnds) of dollars just in building an inventory of musical instruments. All we're asking is that our students get a chance to at least see and hear and, yes, even play an instrument while they study music. For many students, a music class is only as interesting as the instruments being played. I asked several friends, in preparation for this year, what they remembered best from elementary music classes. Many times, I heard the answer that they enjoyed the day when the music teacher shared the "real" instruments with the class. That, for me personally, was the day I first played a trombone; a moment that changed my life forever and sent me on a path that now is giving me an opportunity to do the same for my students. I desperately want to ensure that every student here is able to see and hear a trumpet, a trombone, a flute, a clarinet, a saxophone, a violin, cello, and some percussion instruments, yet, as a brand new program, our students may be left with videos and recordings, and no opportunity to experience the real thing. This project would ensure that each of my students gets to have those same moments that inspired my lifelong pursuit of music, opportunities to discover that they, too, can become a flutist, or a cellist, or whatever type of musician they dream to become.
