My students come from a city with a large poverty rate, where nearly 2/3 of students have free and reduced lunch in our district. Students often lack a sense of security & safety in the community. Our school is a safe haven for them. Despite all odds, our students are polite, kind, and ambitious. Many need an extra push and constant encouragement telling them that they are smart- and that they too, can make it. Students work hard in class, with many focusing on, and working to get into college. We work to develop our students to be career ready, with many opportunities to join in trades-schooling in the older grades. Unfortunately, we do not have extra funds for projects such as these, and what I am seeing with much of today's youth is that they are more focused on their cell phones rather than getting exercise.
