I have a classroom of middle-school aged students with Autism. Their skills are splintered, but they have many strengths and have made good progress in developing some pre-vocational skills needed for employment after they graduate. Developmentally, they function on a toddler to kindergarten level in some skill areas, while some of them are reading and writing on a higher academic level. My students work very hard and feel pride in their accomplishments when they complete difficult tasks or activities. Our school is a Title I school because we have a high poverty rate. We have extremely limited funding and our entire district for all students receives free breakfasts and lunch daily. Even with all the difficulties my students face in their home environments, they push themselves to do the best that they can every day in school.
