The text Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is critical to the high school’s updated International Baccalaureate program, as well as the grade level junior English classes. It will be taught according to IB and Common core state standards, and will incorporate historical documents as well. Aside from the educational “standards” it’s a rich, interwoven story about generational loss. Students will question what it means to be happy, how loss controls our lives beyond “making us sad” and how a person recovers. This text will also illuminate for students a period in American history that often is discussed in history class, but the students didn’t experience: 9/11. Many students don’t even know what it is, let alone its impact on America. Through this text we will talk about how 9/11 changed America.
