I teach 7th grade Life Science to 175 students in a high-needs public middle school. Almost all of my students perform below grade level in math and English. Even worse than this statistic is the impact it has on my students who have grown so familiar with it. 7th grade is the first year that most of my students get the experience of attending a science class with a teacher who is dedicated only to teaching science. I present my class to my students as a fresh start, a class that they are “NOT behind in before they even begin”. This provides them with relief and the confidence that they need to succeed. My expectation for my students in my classroom is that they learn not only the required standards for 7th grade science, but also gain laboratory skills, inquiry skills, math skills, writing skills, and reading skills necessary as a foundation for high school and eventually college.
