My students are studying rhetoric in my school's new AP Language class. I want them to be able to understand how authors, journalists, politicians, and advertisers use words to communicate, persuade, and manipulate. I also want my students to be able to write and speak effectively, so that they can go out into the world and communicate their personal truths to others. The majority of students at my school come from humble backgrounds. College is not a given. The students in my AP Language class are working hard to prepare themselves for an education beyond high school. Most will be the first in their families to attend college.
