The students in my classroom range in age from 15 to 21 years old and live in high-poverty neighborhoods. They attend a specialized day school for students with developmental disabilities and cognitive impairments. Although they are at the high school age level, the students in my classroom function below a 3-year-old level. My students are mostly non-verbal and rely on assistive technology to help them communicate. We use basic switch devices to help communicate with each other. Although, we do have a smart board, it can be very hard to access due to physical needs! Many of my students use wheelchairs or walkers to move about and require repositioning in adapted equipment throughout the school day. For example, a student may need to lay on a mat table or on a bean bag. Some students may need to be in an adapted chair, too.
