My students live in the North End neighborhood of the city and attend the neighborhood school. Many of them perform below grade level in reading due in part to the inaccessibility to books. My students love to learn and are excited by the novels that we read in my middle school ELA classroom. I frequently hear them saying "Don't stop here! Let's keep reading!" when it is time to switch classes. It is my goal to continue their love for learning and engaging with the text outside of my classroom by providing each of them with their own copy of each of the novels.
