Students in my classes are from Haiti, Dominican Republic, Pakistan, Albania and Nigeria. Some belong to Student Government, the Debate Team, and multiple sports teams. They are verbal and interested in sharing ideas about justice, success, human rights and other important issues. They find these ideas in the books we read and write multiple drafts of essays that help them understand opposing viewpoints. Their Humanities class focuses on world history including colonialism, imperialism and independence movements. The students are able to integrate ideas from English class and Humanities class to understand why people move and how people live during revolutions and war. My students are mostly from low-income households and aspire to have more security and options than their parents have. They understand that a college education is an important part of their life journey.
