Hello, prospective donors, I'm a seventh-grade English teacher in Suffolk, Virginia. I fell in love with reading when I was young because it offered me a way to escape reality. As a teacher, my goal is to show my students the powerful portal that a good book can become; if they are sad or lonely or angry, they can read their way out of those negative emotions by living vicariously through the protagonist. Not only does reading offer students a way to temporarily hide from challenging circumstances, but it also teaches them the crux of humanity: empathy. In my mind, there is no better teacher of what it means to be human being than to live the lives of a hundred characters in a hundred different books. I am also a firm believer in the issue of social justice, and I seek to empower my students with the knowledge necessary to succeed in the future, regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.
