Our school has a diverse population of enthusiastic, hardworking children. The library is used by all 693 kindergarten through fifth grade students every week. That is an average of 138 scheduled students a day in the library. This number does not take into consideration the additional students coming in on their own time, such as during recess and before and after school daily. Many of these students want to use the five 12-year-old computers in the library to read the digital books available, type reports, practice math facts and take comprehension tests. Many of my students do not have computers in their homes, and the school needs to be the equalizers in giving these students access to technology, Students are "wasting time" standing in line rather than being on-line. The school has no funds to purchase additional computers for the library. We have been given the chance to use four iPads if we can provide charge stations and a means of keeping the iPads safe and secure.
