Since 12 of 17 of my students are English Language learners, they struggle with oral language. They do not speak in complete sentences; however, they use 1-2 words phrases to communicate. By the end of first grade, students are expected to produce a story with a beginning, middle, and end. They are expected to use details and vivid language in their stories. Students are also expected to be able to retell stories. Furthermore, the students have several speaking and listening standards. My entire schools vocabulary scores are low because English is not many students first language. This puppet theater is a step to get these students communicating through having fun. They will use the puppets to retell stories they heard. They will learn new vocabulary. Furthermore, if students are able to produce complete sentences, this will carry over into their writing.
