Our entire curriculum is based on essential questions that are all tied to the theme of social justice. Social justice is the idea that we need to treat everyone with equal respect despite any differences in race, gender, sexuality, religion, economic status, nationality, etc. Even though we teach “urban” students, there is very little diversity within our student body. Because of this, we focus on teaching our students about those who are different from themselves. This is done, in part, through our unit on the Holocaust. Before coming to the 8th grade, our students have had no other experiences learning about the Holocaust. We strive to teach them not only about the Holocaust, but to also get them to find ways to learn from what happened during that time. This is where the connection to social justice, and the novel The Boy in the Stripped Pajama, comes in. Our students connect more when they are able to put a human face to the horrific events of the Holocaust. That is why it is so important that they are able to read The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas. By being able read about what it was like to live through the Holocaust with a narrator their own age, our students will be able to fully understand how they can learn from what happened, and see value in treating those who are different from themselves with respect and dignity.
