My students are five to six-year-old children who come from Spanish speaking households. They currently attend a small elementary school in Virginia, and have attended preschool in English, but have mostly communicated in Spanish for the first four years of their lives. Some of them come from homes where nobody is proficient in English, making these little kids the most English proficient person in their homes by the time they are in first grade. Although these kids' parents are genuinely interested in helping them succeed, they lack the knowledge of the language, and in some cases the native language literacy needed to help them learn how to read. These kids are working hard in learning how to speak and understand English at the same time as they try to develop literacy skills.
