My students are predominantly African American and Hispanic from low income neighborhoods in East Houston. My students are extremely motivated and strive to do well academically despite many of their realities. My school is a very welcoming and healthy environment for these students. They are able to use our school as their safe place. No matter what goes on at home or in the neighborhood, they know our school is always a place they can look to for assistance and support. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to impact these students and become both a teacher and role model for them. I find it completely amazing how well the students at my school are able to cope with their situations and persevere in the presence of it all. Despite the fact that many of my students are housed in a shelter, they are still able to come to school every morning with shiny, bright smiles.
