I have 24 first graders who attend a Title I school in Nevada. Ninety-five percent of the students at my school live in poverty and struggle to have their basic needs met at home and seventy percent are English Language Learners. Most of my students are below grade level standards because they have so many risk factors working against them. Even with so much hardship, they come to school each day excited to learn. School is a safe place for them. One of the biggest obstacles I face is just getting my students to practice reading. My students are not likely to practice at home. Many of them have little access to books, illiterate parents, or they are more worried about where their next meal will come from than reading. I believe that if I can provide my students with new, engaging reading materials that are at their level, the students will be able to practice their newly found reading skills and become more fluent readers.
