My freshmen come into my classroom reading at a range of third grade all the way to beyond 12th grade. This span requires me to get creative because each child is owed progress. To meet the rigorous demands of the Common Core, students need guided reading practice using annotation skills and writing instruction that forces them to justify their thinking using evidence from grade level texts and explain how that evidence proves their assertion or thesis--skills required in EVERY subject now, not just English or advanced AP courses. As a school, we do not meet the requirements that have allowed other school in our district to keep up with school related technology. We have about 80 computers for our 1900 students, no wireless access, and no Smart Boards. We also see no funding in sight to address this deficit.
