Our school serves a diverse population in a diverse city. Many of my students come to school with challenges that they face courageously every day. They are eager to learn, and I am eager to teach them. Our school district has one of the greatest socioeconomic divides in the State of California; students in our schools are integrated such that children from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds are classmates that learn side by side within the same four walls. The achievement gap is real, it is wide, and I work to close that gap as much as possible every day through engaging and powerful lessons in which the curriculum is accessible to all students. My students work hard to achieve grade level standards in all academic areas; approximately 1/3 of my class is performing behind grade level in some capacity. I often find that my lessons could be enhanced via the use of materials that we do not yet have.
