This Fall I would like to give my Deaf and Hard of Hearing students a reason to smile when they walk through my door by transforming my room into a Deaf-friendly, engaging cafe similar to Central Perk in Friends! My plan for this year is to not go back to what school was like before we went virtual, but instead to start fresh with some new techniques and classroom decor to remind my students that learning can be fun! We all need a little boost to get us back into the swing of things and hopefully an updated space would be just that! I would like to start class sitting in the cafe corner, practicing writing their weekly words from their sophisticated felt board word walls. Another component Id like to add to our word studies this year is sensory play! We will use sensory trays to practice our weekly words in shaving cream and other engaging mediums. Every year, I have used a classroom economy and this year I plan on bringing it back with some new, engaging ways to teach financial literacy. I would love to offer some hot chocolate and snacks with their classroom dollars in our cafe. Most importantly, we will need to start from square one with relationship building and I think the best way to do that after the last year we had would be through playing games. I also would like to offer fidgets to help with the need to be on their phones while we relearn how to interact without computers in front of us. But don't worry, their phones will be safely charging on the charger!
