In our library, I serve students at a 7-12 magnet high school in Newark, NJ. My students love books- love roaming our shelves, looking at covers, even just physically holding them. Younger students walk out of each library visit clutching new manga books tightly and my upper grade students use the space for studying and relaxing. The library is a space that is used by students, teachers and parents throughout the day. I also teach a media literacy class with middle schoolers that covers issues like research, staying safe online, cyberbullying. Students have a lot to say about the digital landscape and discuss the issues surrounding digital citizenship in this class. Students also use the library as a safe space to explore their interests and celebrate their identities. We are an anti racist, LGBTQIA+ friendly and overall safe space for all students and their families. The library's needs change as the community does.
