My students are 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders at a charter school in the South Bronx. Our school is a college prep school and focuses on preparing students to have the skills, knowledge, and character traits needed to get into college and be successful when they get there. A select group of twelve students in the school have demonstrated strong artistic abilities and a desire to fine-tune their skills by learning how to use new art mediums. They are sweet, kind young men and women who love art and spend much of their free time drawing. Many of them do not have access to art supplies at home so they draw on lined looseleaf paper with the writing utensils they use for class. These students, who come from low income neighborhoods in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn, eventually want to be able to apply to top art colleges like School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, and Rhode Island School of Design.
