I teach a group of approximately 40 heterogeneous, K-5 special education students. Our school is eligible for Title 1 funds, which means our students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. My students are fun, engaged, diligent, hard working, and interested in self-improvement. Socioeconomic difficulties often prevent my students from having appropriate reading materials available to them outside of the classroom. Many of my students are interested in reading more about plant growth, space, animals, athletes, American history and biographies to name a few. They often choose books from the library on these subjects, but most of the books available to them are beyond their reading level. My students would be thrilled to have non-fiction books available to them on their present reading level in order to improve their reading skills and broaden their understanding of the world around them.
