I am in a co-taught classroom with 34 third grade girls. We are in an elementary school of 1015 students with many different ethnicities, languages, cultures and backgrounds. Almost 80 % of our students are considered at poverty and 75 % are transient (moving into or out of the school). In third through fifth grade the students are gender based, so I have an all girl's classroom. This presents many opportunities for them to be bonded but also new challenges for us as teachers. Due to the struggles my students face outside and inside of school; we have a wide range of abilities. Their reading levels rank from first to fifth grade and are very similar for math. However, despite what most might call impossible, all of our students last year past the reading state exam and we know all will this year as well. Failure is not an option for us or our students.
