Three of my classes are mainstream biology and two are sheltered English Learning (EL) biology classes. Most of the students have been in the United States for only a few months to about three years. The language and ethnic composition of these classes are very diverse. I have students from India, Mexico, the Philippines, Afghanistan, Korea, Samoa, China and other places throughout the world. Some students are so new to the English language that often, our most effective form of communication is through visuals. Science is content language intensive, and the words are often foreign even to students who are fluent in English, therefore even my mainstream students benefit from all the visual learning strategies used in my classroom. About 90% of my students are freshmen. My mainstream classes are also very ethnically diverse and most students come from low-income and working families.
