My students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. While some are growing up in wealthier neighborhoods and have been drawn to our school because of our focus on science and math, more than half come from low-income families and represent minority groups. For the majority of our students who go on to college, they will be the first ones in their families to do so. Despite their different backgrounds, all of my students have shown an enthusiasm for science and for understanding the world we live in. Our school is small, and is focused not only on academic rigor, but also on fostering non-academic behavior that will make our students successful in the future. Being able to provide laboratory experiences that will be applicable in the real world could make the difference.
