My students are funny, charismatic, optimistic kids who come from a very impoverished area in which many of their parents did not complete high school. They are students whose standards have sadly been set for them by uneducated parents. They know nothing more than what they see at home, and I have made it my personal mission to teach them what lies beyond the streets and neighborhoods they have unfortunately never seen past. Most of these children do not own their own books, do not visit the library, do not have computers to access information, which leads them to having very limited vocabulary and understanding of the world around them. Sadly, many experiences that we take for granted, such as going to a movie or taking a vacation, are experiences my children know nothing about. My children are fascinated with books. As soon as one student returns one of my very few books back to my library, another one snatches it up.
