The small musicians of our school come into my classroom ready to sing, play and develop their musical skills. I teach with this quote from Cheryl Lavender as my mantra: "The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children." I work in a Title I (high poverty) school with students who live near a large metropolitan area, but usually have to commute over six miles to get to experience the things offered by living near a vibrant cultural center like Austin. Like any group of kids, my students need active, hands-on activities to reach their highest musical potential. Many of them will only participate in music classes during their elementary school years, so it is vital that this experience is rich, impactful and positive.
