My school is a Title 1 school, located within the forth largest school district in the country, and within one of the poorest neighborhoods in the county. 90% of the students in my school receive free or reduced price lunch. As you may know, Title 1 schools receive additional funding to help close the gap between low-income students and their counterparts. Unfortunately, much of these funds never reach the music classroom. My students are primarily minority students with a very large African-American and Hispanic population. Although our school services about 400 students, we continue to struggle each year as our enrollment plummets. In order to attract the best and brightest, it is imperative that our school provide a high quality education. A well functioning music program can make a significant difference.
