Our school needs a new incubator. Every spring students have the opportunity to observe the hatching of baby chicks. This is part of our life science curriculum; we study the anatomy of a chicken egg and the life cycle of chickens while the eggs develop. Seemingly lifeless eggs are warmed and gently rocked in an incubator until there is a telltale crack in the shell. Ever so gently the intrepid chick pecks its way out! Squeals of excitement can be heard as the chicks emerge (pip). Nothing matches the wonder in our students' faces as they watch the chicks hatch and then grow! They care for them, providing for their needs. They observe the physical and behavioral development. The study crosses over to other curriculum areas and draws our entire community together. As the chicks grow we find a local home for them and are able to visit the chickens and stay in touch. In the last few years, we have hatched several generations from our classroom experience.
