My school is a STEM magnet school for grades K-5. We are a small school with less than 425 students, who come from five different surrounding rural communities. There are four classes at each grade level. Parents apply for their child to attend our school and sign a contract of support. Most of the eighty-eight fourth graders are motivated to read the books from the media center, but some are not motivated to read books that are at a higher level or to read more than required. We have an open media center in which students can check out books whenever they need them. Each classroom uses Accelerated Reader (AR) to check student reading comprehension and vocabulary. The students have a goal to reach weekly or biweekly. The librarian provides the Sunshine State Young Reader titles, which are great books nominated by students, teachers, parents and librarians to be on the SSYR yearly list. When students are introduced to these books, the titles are always in demand.
