This year I moved from my districts highest performing school to its lowest. I also switched from elementary to middle. My students have over a 75% free and reduced lunch rate, and at this time approximately 46% of them are not able to read and comprehend grade level text. I was appalled to discover that the core text was written in 2003. Some of the stories in the 8th grade text are now in the district's 5th grade anthology, which is less than five years old! My students need exposure to complex text that will prepare them for the rigor of high school and ultimately college.
