My students need hands-on experiences with mathematical concepts in order to develop a deeper understanding of math. When students are able to manipulate items it creates a more concrete understanding of math. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and hands-on experiences provide the support they need to learn efficiently. After many hardships with Hurricane Harvey, it is important to give my students all the tools they need to feel successful. Using math manipulatives not only builds confidence in my students, but also their ability to succeed in math for years to come. They will use the magnetic base ten blocks, place value cards, and realistic coins with partners which will also build their language skills.
