My students are great kids! They are inquisitive, creative, hard working learners. Unfortunately, writing is a subject that gets put on the back burner way too often. I work in an amazing school system but I think this is a fact across the board. Writing is an important form of communication and should be given the attention it deserves. Writing and illustrating student books will allow my students to experience making art as well as becoming stronger writers. They are offered choices in their experience with accountability to produce their best work. My kids love to draw (as most kids do). This experience isn't "work"; it is a creative and enjoyable way to aid in student learning. I feel it is important to provide empowering experiences that go beyond teaching good writing skills. This project encourages ownership of ones learning and being held accountable for putting your best foot forward.
