I am the lucky teacher in a Specialized Academic classroom for children with mild to moderate learning disabilities. We are in a self-contained primary classroom in a small California elementary school. The teachers in the school are wonderful and have embraced my group for mainstreaming and as part of the school community. Most of my young friends have short attention spans which is why I am trying any means possible to grab their attention for longer and longer stretches in order to improve their academic performance and to get them prepared for the outside world. They each have a special need of some sort such as autism, a learning disability, a medical need, or a behavior that interferes with their day to day ability to learn and function. My job is to challenge them, interest them, and move them along to the best of all of our abilities.
