Many of my students come with the baggage of the unbelievable burdens they endure from their home lives. My school is located in a large urban school district. Demographically the vast majority (over 90%) qualify for free/reduced lunch and are living below the poverty guidelines. For the most part, they have very limited access to resources and experiences outside their immediate community. Despite these odds if you were to take a snapshot of my school community you would see a strong emphasis on academic achievement and our students consistently strive to rise to the occasion. Although socioeconomically disadvantaged, I have a strong belief in my students' potential and work hard to effectively nurture it. This year over half of my class has tested significantly below grade level in reading. This will undoubtedly affect their academic success across the curriculum since reading is used in all subject areas. Nevertheless, most of my students come to school eager to learn and try.
