My students are typical tweens and teens. In seventh grade, they are developing both emotionally and physically. Seventh grade is a hard year full of learning, love, loss, and lastly, hormones. With so much going on developmentally, my students need as much help staying focused on education as possible. I never knew that there was more than one way to sit in a student desk until I taught middle school. Indeed, some of the stunts I have seen rival the moves of international circus contortionists! In any given class, on any given day, you can look into my middle school classroom and find students attempting to slump, lean and hunch. With all of the new innovative ways to teach, the student desk has perhaps been the most neglected classroom item. My students' energy level ranges from Piglet to Pooh to Tigger to Roo. Old, cold, and hard, these desk provide little opportunity for movement which boosts student comprehension and time on-task.
