Many of the students in our class face challenges that would test the strongest person. Despite facing obstacles like poverty, learning English and problems at home, my students come ready to learn and they work hard! They rise to the expectation to be great learners and soak up the curriculum we are learning in fifth grade. Many of them come to school each day even though they are struggling with difficult issues at home. Our class is made up of students that come from 5 different countries and 70% of them are learning English as a second language. We learn how to deal with the difficulties of life through reading books where characters overcome their difficult challenges. I find my students gain strength in their own lives, because we use books that they can relate to and they learn from the characters in the story they read. We set long-term goals to graduate high school, attend college and reach their career dreams.
