My students are 8th graders in a grade 5-8 building. My eighth grade science students are currently transitioning from an integrated science curriculum to a physical science/engineering curriculum. Students learn best through exploration and hands on activities. Our current text books do not support such activities, forcing us to to look elsewhere for resources. Hands on activities need not be expensive, but often require extra costs in which our school budget cannot afford. I hate to continue to rely on students and their families to bring in supplies. Materials are often brought in or purchased by myself, students, parents or patrons. Our "free and reduced population" is growing dramatically, we need alternatives such as those provided by Donors Choose. Our state has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards and many of the standards are much more attainable with proper materials for hands on learning.
