Teaching methods play an important role in music education. The Orff approach is a method of teaching children about music that engages their mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting, and the use of percussion instruments. For instance, the Orff method often uses instruments like xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiel. Orff Instruments for children began to be developed in 1928 under the direction of composer Carl Orff. They were modeled after a wooden African instrument. The unique quality Orff instruments possess are removable bars. This way the bars that are not used can be removed and the student has a greater chance for success. Orff said, "Experience first, then intellectualize" and a successful and fun experience is the basis for a positive learning process. The Orff instruments all possess unique timbres, which make all parts clear and well defined. their use helps children become sensitive listeners and considerate participants as they play together in an ensemble. Used as a large group, I can create an orchestra. Used as a small group, it can become an accompaniment for storytelling and movement. These instruments allow unity with music, movement, dance, and speech. A complete music room should have a combination of soprano, alto, and bass xylophones and metallophones, and soprano and alto glockenspiels. Appropriate mallets should also be provided and my classroom does not own enough mallets to create the experiences described above.
