I am a self-contained special education teacher in a Title 1 school in South Carolina. Our school is spilt gender and I have the privilege of teaching 6-8th grade boys. We have a wide variety of classifications in our room ranging from a moderate intellectual disability, autism and emotional disabilities as well as many more in between. This group of young men have the desire to want to learn, but need a smaller environment, more hands-on activities and the larger concepts broken down to a level they are able to understand. Our class would benefit from the addition of hands on science kits in order to meet the state requirements and prepare these students not only for testing as well as life experiences. I would love to be able to expose them to a positive classroom experience where Science is fun and not overwhelming.
