I teach seventh grade English and World History at a Title I public school. As a school that holds our students to high standards, we are challenging all of the students to read forty books from a variety of genres by the end of the year. My students are very enthusiastic about this challenge, but many don't have access to the quantity and variety of books for them to be successful. While we do have some funding for the school library, it is not enough to keep the shelves stocked with high-interest books. My own classroom library is sparse and in serious need of updating. I simply can't afford the amount of books it will take to give my students a fair chance at the challenge.
