I teach at a charter school in a city where education is often not a priority. For my students, however, education is often number one. Teaching three classes of pre-calculus, my students are tasked with preparing for post-high school mathematics which makes college seem more tangible and real. In my classroom, students are becoming prepared for a college level math class, with lectures, problem sets, and complex problems that can take a whole class to solve. My other class, Math Lab, is much more urgent in their need. I teach a group of around twenty students who have previously been left behind in their math classes. They struggle with fractions and negative numbers but they work harder than any other group of students, wanting to turn their story with math around and feel successful in any situation they encounter with math. They will mostly be working at their own pace through the material, taking ownership of their learning which is where a lot of these materials come in.
