Our classroom library is in need of picture books that honor and reflect the experiences of our students and their families. My English Learners may come from different countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Korea, India, and Somalia, but they share a common love of reading- from me reading aloud to them or reading a book I have assigned to them, but especially when they are able to choose a book to read independently themselves. All of these books have been chosen in an effort to promote self-acceptance, self-confidence, and self-esteem. These books will engage my students in generating valuable conversations about our identities, our relationships across cultures, as well as racial injustices while helping them become better readers as well. Freire (1987) summarized the importance of connecting what students read to their lives, and we as educators should not forget his words. Freire wrote: "Reading the world always precedes reading the word, and reading the word implies continually reading the world." My students will greatly benefit and appreciate your support.
