I teach Kindergarten through 8th grade students in a low-income neighborhood. The students at my school come from very diverse backgrounds. The general population of students at our school is of Hispanic, Polish, and Arabic origin. Many students come directly from another country, and in turn, are completely bilingual or English Language Learners. Due to all of the language barriers, it is essential that they are constantly surrounded by literacy. We also have a large population of diverse learners at our school. We have a few self-contained classrooms with students who desperately need a music outlet as part of their day. Some of these students are non-verbal communicators, and some of the picture books chosen are geared directly towards them. The books allow them to participate too! I've seen such an improvement in a child with special needs after just a few music classes. It is impossible to not be inspired by the amount of joy they can bring to their peers when brought together.
