My students all have a varying degree of intellectual disabilities, I work in the Cognitively Disabled classroom, K-12, with transition services thru the age of 21. With the varying ages, it is important that my room creates a place of security and learning for all. My biggest challenge is creating a space that allows them to experience multi-sensory experiences. A sensory room/space allows my students to explore, have a calming space, and practice their social skills. That is my main goal for them this year... To create a space where they can just "be." They can be busy exploring, learning ways to calm themselves, free their mind/body for awhile from all the business, to learn to communicate what they are sensing.
