My 5th grade general education classroom at James Dougherty Elementary School in the East Bay is a vibrant, diverse community of resilient learners. Many of my fifth graders are English Language Development (ELD) and below-grade-level intervention students who are working hard to bridge academic gaps in reading and math. They are enthusiastic, creative, and eager to learn, but they often face challenges when navigating complex intermediate-grade concepts in a second language or when faced with needed reteaching. To thrive, they need hands-on materials, visual aids, and sensory support that make abstract concepts tangible, accessible, and engaging.
